After an extremely slow and unhelpful exchange with my web host's technical support, in which I was told that it was "not possible" to install the Image::Magick Perl module on this server (not possible? really?), I've decided to try doing without CAPTCHA for a while by setting my spam filter to be more aggressive. If your comment gets rejected and/or doesn't appear within a few hours, please email me and let me know so I can keep fiddling with the settings.
If I can't get this working well, I may try the reCAPTCHA plugin (which is what I was using before), but as far as I can tell that hasn't been updated for MovableType 5, so I'm not sure it will work. If anyone has any suggestions (other than moving to a different combination of web host and blogging software, an option which is on the table as well), please do let me know.
Later: I think I've got most of the spam comments filtered out, and most good comments getting through, but to make sure your comment gets through, you should not include more than one link (including the one you type in the 'URL' box, if you do that).
Even Later (Oct. 5, 2013): Got CAPTCHA working again.
